The Sadie McCann Fund was started in memory of Sadie McCann, who was diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome, an extremely rare condition. The Fund provides direct financial assistance to families caring for a child with the same diagnosis. Their Wix site had grown hard to manage. The recipients page listed every family the Fund had ever helped, and the board wanted a modern, professional look modeled on the Ronald McDonald House Central Indiana site, with a prominent Donate button and impact numbers that count up on scroll.
I built the site as a lightweight custom block theme with no page builder, paired with a small plugin for everything staff update regularly. Grant recipients are a simple form with name, photo, and grant purpose, and they display newest first in a fixed grid. Impact numbers are edited on a single settings screen. The annual Celebrating Sadie event can be turned on or off with one checkbox, which adds it to the menu and shows a home page banner. I also added a contact form and connected the existing Mailchimp list.
I donated the design and development. The Fund paid a flat $250 to cover the site and domain migration.
The trickiest part was getting off Wix cleanly. The Fund's email was Google Workspace billed through Wix, which blocked Google's free nonprofit plan. I mapped every DNS record, sequenced the Workspace billing transfer, the site launch, and the domain move to SiteGround so email would not go down, and added the missing Google DKIM record.
